These bowls were thrown on the pottery wheel, then decorated with a black slip. When they were dry enough to handle, the design was carved by hand using the sgraffito technique revealing the contrasting clay underneath. They were then fired in the kiln at 2170°F.
The clay is a warm ivory colored ceramic stoneware, and is glazed with a glossy clear coat inside and out.
